the great escape; | 6:54 AM

RIPB retreat! i'm far too siannified to post about it now, but it was rather good. Just that the price of 130 smackers was a little bit too high. not that i'm short, mind you.

basketball with mr teo was pretty fun though.

PS: I'm 3A'08! along with py kevin weixuan kwuntong josiah kenneth yeeshing guanlin benn chua hanbin wendi bobyong gerald, as far as i know.

inside your heaven; | 6:34 AM

well, RIPB retreat tomorrow! first chalet in dunno how many eons to past.

Open House 2 today was a subdued affair. No flamboyant decorations, munny-guzzling banners or watchacallamits. Just boards containing information, information, and more information. (oh you knew that alreadya?)

As a replacement for kangjie I reported 30 minutes before I was scheduled, but it didn't really matter. As the neeeeeeeeps or prefects manning the booth we had to manage the admin-related stuff like keying in the RI-wannabe's particulars, PSLE score, etc. The more interesting part of our jobs was giving a tours. There were actually super detailed notes on it and Guan Lin told me not the refer to them.

oho, ggxx.com.sg.

So, yours truly was trying to remember every single gritty yet interesting detail my brain could store (that's not alot) about the simply fascinating buildings to the parents. The parents were mostly more interested than the RIwannabes, frankly, and one p6 guy just kept silent throughout the entire tour.

=.= gosh that's scary.

"Now, an interesting part of our Junior Block is that our roof -points upwards- is actually retractable! So sunlight can actually come in."

-cue parents's reactions of surprise- etc etc.

all that matters; | 6:19 AM

ho-hum fellow humans.

so much's happened over the past few days (along with many pictures being snapped, i admit) but due to the sheer laziness of me moving 1 metre to the left to the other computer ; which coincidentally has all the pictures uploaded into it, apologies for no blogpost/pik post about the past few days.

Really! by sheer coincidence i'm using the noober computer.

well, this is going to be more of a personal reflections post about the past 2 RI years - some RI prefects have done it too, but it's slightly different since i'm still an NEP. Did I mention that there's a RIPB retreat coming up on 27th? wooh.

well, class-ified post, if you get what I mean.

1A'06 to 2A'07.

Well, sure. First day I heard that I was going to be in 1A ; to tell the truth I wasn't all that happy. I didn't have a reaaaaally high impression of a class in the first few alphabets and it wasn't really what I was accustomed (sp?) to.

Made my first friend (and one of the most irritating ones, in a good way too! :P) ; Jonathan! Btw, he's taking tripscienceleet too, so hope that we get into the same class along with the others, yeah? Nickname: ZhuNaDan (Pig take Egg, coined by PingYen/Weili)

Patrick was another one. Skinny guy, and when I sat next to him (he remembered) that I kept koping his correction tape. Now really, I did? :O Though he was a little obscene (oo louis) at times, good one, nonetheless except his sleeping time's reaaaaaally early. Course, secondary 2 was where it stretched from 9.30 to about 10.30. Improvement! (Nickname: Skellie, Skeleton, Pat, Rah!, coined by half the class) Too bad he's taking 2SciGeogAEP. :(

KT from gym. He looks better without glasses, and he's taking tripscienceleet too! He's also one of the half-colour award winners (by a stroke of luck, I might add) and also one of the leading actors in THE HOUSE OF SPICES. which pwned your socks, along with your shoes. Someday I'm going to add descriptions for the link sections, too. (Nickname: Katie, Katiemon, Currypuff Girl #1)

I'm finding it quite tiring now and not to mention troublesome, so I guess you'll have to wait for the links sections to be fixed (as soon as i find a friggin new blogskin =.=)

Memorable events, you may ask?

Well, funny how I remember our class was united in...many queer ways. Course, when Wendi/Wenqi was on the shooting range everyone (except a few nice people, including me! :D) was itching to get their hands on a rocket launcher or summat. Inevitably, the class pissed off some teachers too, but as the years progressed (due to maturity?) it got less frequent, but no less hilarious.

Soccer was another fantastic bonding activity. Sooner or later people got classified into "pro" players or "nubs", etc but it was no less great. Frictions did occur, but they were far and few between in our 2nd year as a class.

Drama Challenge. Aha :)

It was initally..frustrating, definitely to see the leaders of this play quarrel and exchange some unpolite words. Disheartening, too ; and I never expected our play to turn up so well and to get 1st prize in the drama challenge. Guess that towards the deadline people started to buck up, turn up for rehearsals, and get their game on.

Now that's what I'm talking about.

Assistant Monitoring 2A'07 was no doubt an experience that i've never regretted, though being in the line of fire by the teachers (when they caught some notable classmates playing soccer) and listening to that responsibility talk was hard. No sacrifice, no victory eh? This is undoubtly a fun class (along with the other sec 2 classes, i'm sure) and certain rules had to be bent. They definitely didn't include playing cards, smuggling food up to class, secretly watching movies on iPods during chinese class, playing handphones games, etc.

Definitely not. -cough-

As the junior year closes, i remember that sec 2 year was very difficult for me. More commitments, responsibilities, homework, projects, etc. 2A'07 was also difficult to handle too.

Loved every single bit of it.

Sec 3 eh? Carpe Diem.

pickin' up the pieces; | 7:00 AM

depressing stuff happened today:

ruijie fractured his wrist again after his 2nd day of training which is really, really unlucky. Doing a fan sheng on an overly-chalked bar with weird grips is not a good idea ; too bad we only found that fact out after he got injured from coach. He said this was the only problem in the design of these grips though. now i'm not that confident in it anymore :S

sigh; guess it's partly my fault too. maybe i shouldn't have asked for high bar though we did pommel already yesterday. cue these people with bad premonitions saying that they felt that there was something bad goingto happen, etc. guess it's really part of my fault causing it to happen. should've never said anything and bow down to the masters of domination. sorry won't heal it before 6 weeks past, will it.

patrick. hope the student advisor helps him out with his family and his head-strong father who's trying to go to NZ and dragging his family along too. that's kinda depressing if you can't really help, so I apologise if i was disturbing you on msn about the student advisor's email =/

--

well, good point for today (which really stood out) for me today was really a much more smaller affair compared to the rest. well, there was this rather elderly woman walking up the overhead bridge's stairs and she was carrying this rather bulky bag. at first i was wondering if she was okay, but then something just told me to help her.

"um, ma'am, do you need help with that?"

well, i was just expecting a simple thanks and a smile which would've been enough, but I didn't expect her to go something like this.

"oh, thank you! you must be an angel from God! -smiles in that old granny sorta way-"

haha. she kept repeating something like that. it was a little astonishing at first, and it really just warmed my heart despite the drizzle from above. funny how i remember this quote that strangers are just family that you haven't come to know about. really, one may perceive it to be a bit extreme, but i really think small actions do go a long way like this case.

really, an angel? i've still a long way to go, unfortunately.

darn, can't find a nice blogskin suited for me :(

get well soon ruijie, and cheer up. 6 weeks left only!

SPH NEWSPAPER COMPETITION 2007 CHECK OUT HO

Definition:

The National Schools Newspaper Competition started its inaugural year in 2005. Although 20 schools qualified for the semi-finals based on their school newsletters, only 10 schools made it to the finals. These 10 secondary schools then participated in the finals, a 24-hour challenge held at the SPH News Centre on 12-13 December 2005. The aim was to produce a 4 page, A3 sized newsletter within that time.
Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road) beat 9 other schools to emerge as the "Gold" (1st) prize winner, taking home S$5,000 cash and a trophy. The team consisted of Timothy Fang, 15, Whang Yihang, 15, Michael Davies, 15, Mervyn Lau, 14, and Ian Yap, 14. Raffles Institution and CHIJ (St. Nicholas) came in "Silver" (2nd) and "Bronze" (3rd) winners respectively.
In 2006- the second year of the competition,
Victoria School defeated the other 9 schools emerging as champions ("Gold" prize winner) taking home S$3000 cash and a Thinkpad x41 tablet PC. CHIJ (St. Nicholas) and Raffles Institution came in "Silver" (2nd) and "Bronze" (3rd) winners respectively.

According to Wikipedia.

So, yesterday, it heralded the start of 2007's Competition. Was feeling preeeeetty excited about it, and i was determined to not let my toe get in the way of this year's newspaper gathering/photography.

PS: Stubbed toe's situation is aggravated, my socks has blood on it due to some of them oozing out after walking the entire day.

Turns out Daniel and Sampson (SAMPHY!) were late, 2 hours and 15 minutes respectively. We were basically briefed by Bryan Van De Breek, a Straits Time Photographer about what photos we should take, etc, while another editor was also there to clarify questions.

For the Photo essay, we went to Charcoal, a SHATEC-ran restaurant to teach students enrolling in their culinary/skills/serving courses. There, students basically undertake differnet roles such as the Waitress, cook, etc ; while the personell from SHATEC supervise the place. Pretty cool altogether, though the lighting there was darn too low. Environment was pretty nice; too.

2nd event was a PUB Mock conference. Mr Yap Kheng Guan said that the "student's questions showed 'depth and maturity'", haha. Too bad i wasn't there to take photos because we (our team) had to split up to go different venues. Hongfei took the essay, where Mr Peter Khoo said it was well-written. kool.

Waited like 2 friggin hours down there waiting for them to get back. I set a 13 second record for minesweeper! mind you, this is like my 30th try only. Hongfei/Daniel bu shuang. hoho.

Selecting photos was fine, yet I reckon next time should bring a flashgun along as well. Victoria School had 2 photographers - each of them having a flashgun + Luxury Lenses. Zomgut. That must've cost more then 4k altogether i think. Every school also brought along a DSLR such as 400Ds and D70s/D40s, etc.

PhotoEssay was edited and compiled by Daniel and me, so there's my credit on it! Along with Gulshan's, who did the brief write-up. Captions were by meee.

I have a B/W shot of it. wooooooooooooh.

After editing Samphy's essay (which grammar and spelling was probably as bad as Patrick's) me/Gulshan/Hongfei went to J8. As we needed a photo for the Microsoft Advertisment, I went to best Denkii while the other 2 went to do a poll about whether Teenagers were really concerned about saving the environment. If you received a call yesterday about it, sorry we were THAT desperate.

Yoshi for Dinner! :O Cabbed back to SPH due to my leg hurting like hell.

Started doing the Microsoft Advert and the Photo Essay, and it was near settled by 12am. Yes, we are slackers. Samphy's Essay took like 4 hours to complete =.= since Gulshan kept disturbing him. Or rather, he chose to get distracted.

Took off the plaster on my toe to find out it was bleeeeeeeeeeding.

12-1.30 was basically slacking around waiting for the poll to be finished by Gulshan and Hongfei. My part was already mostly done, so I was just watching Daniel work his magic on Photoshop.

2 to 3.30 was sleeping time for me. Nothing for me to do since i'd done all of mine in the day which included editing essays. Woke up to find most of the essays fit into Microsoft Publisher and the Coverpage fitted in with the poll.

4-7 was basically on the whole editing. Reviewed it with Mr Peter Khoo who gave comments and changed them. Done by 8.

Pretty much done about there, the boring parts.

9 other schools were competing with us. ACS people were undoubtly good with Halo, one of them told me how to kill some giant enemy with a pistol. nice. I still don't understand how people can wear shorts at night as it was FRIGGIN COLD INSIDE. Vest was a life-saver, while I saw others walking around in shorts.

Gosh, they must be hot-blooded or sth.

Samphy suanned Victoria by challenging one of them. Turns out Daniel was the one that brought Rubik's Cube craze to RI and eventually the other schools. He's still pretty imba, ftw.

Print job was pretty okay, though the colour was screwed somewhat. Better then last year's by a large extent. I'm betting SPH's losing funds due to the ink wasted.

Quote of the Day:"Thanks for the memories, because that's all i've got now."

thanks to josiah for the song by jaychou. woot.

well. the fatal extraction took place yesterday. my father didn'te tell me i needed to take a FRIGGIN HELL )&!^@#&*^!@*&^# injection. =.=

It hurt, on the second entry at the back of the gums.

Extraction of the teeth was relatively painless. They said it would wear off after 2 hours (anaesthasia, whatever it's spelt). however, after 30 minutes it started ACHING LIKE HELL. it isn't those type of pin prick pain ; it's those type of aching pain which continues like forever. Painkillers did work for a while though.

At night at Austin's house, it started bleeding. This year Halloween came early for me ; because i'm sure i would make a good vampire. Blood was dripping and it flooded the the cavernous teeth like a monster, as it went closer and closer to the victim's neck.

uh. oops.

Well, at least this is an bloody experience.

I think tomorrow i'm going to have one of my teeth pulled out. ouch. Talking about injuries, I've just received another one in gym today. Hurt like hell initally man, when i just went rolled over the parallel bars.

backwards. shoulder still stings due to the abrasion.

Well, on the plus side ; the books Naughts and Crosses came today! Pre-ordered it from the internet (Amazon.com) and it's really really good. Touches on many issues that are relavant to the world today. (sounds like some endorsement)

Anyway, nothing much to blog about today. Had a dream about the SPH competition and thought that we won second. :S

Let's hope we get better then that!

SPH Training Day!

Reported to the SPH Auditorium at like 9.20 ; when we were supposed to meet at 10am. So much for punctuality. Why can't I be like that for gym trainings! -whistles-

um, anyway. Checked out some of the cool posters that were hung up that were incidentally the newspapers that were entered in the finals for the previous 2 years. The Victoria School's Photo Essay was brilliant - I'm quite sure they had an experienced photographer in their team because the pictures were really top-notch compared to the other schools in 2006. 2005 was where ACS(I) won. They won mainly based due to their flashy/attractive front page where it was definitely more visually appealing then the other newspapers.

As 10pm ticked closer, 4 other schools trickled in - Victoria School, Deyi Secondary, CHIJ, Fairfield Methodist. Turns out that there are another 5 other schools competing too; so that makes a total of 10 finalists taking part in the SPH competition!

-drum roll-

Meeting the seniors was kinda unexpected though. Our I/C was Hongfei, who seemed to have a mostly all-rounded talent for most of them. Problem was that since most of the Secondary 3s had OIP (currently), they couldn't make it for this competition/training sessions. Hence, they had to downgrade to lowly Secondary 2s. (Haha) The other senior then turned up was Daniel. Though he gave me a rather scruffy appearance at first his talent for Computer was really, undisputable. He made Patrick and Wendi seem like total nubcakes (for me, can't be said) He even memorized colours like Orange (0XX0X HTML values) and all those stuff. Zomgut, his designs were also reaaaaaaally good.

He's also being paid 50 bucks an hour by companies to make websites for them. He's also the one judging the Interhouse Posters. O_O AEP-er. Bad point was he was reaaaaaaaaally perverted. fine, somewhat.

Co-operating with them initally was rather difficult because they weren't those type of nice PSL-like people ; instead it was after the few hours then we got to know them better. They got pretty angry at Gulshan though =/

So basically the team's gonna be structured something like this:

Hongfei: Overall Editing and IC
Daniel: Overall Design/Layout and Editing
Samson (some other senior): Writing
Gulshan: Writing
Me!: Photography. (haha, expected)

It's not really confirmed though.

Anyway, the training session got pretty boring after a while and the seniors started playing Minesweeper since they didn't need Microsoft Publisher to make a newspaper (they're THAT good) and chose to use Adobe Photoshop CS3. When the assignment came out they basically chose to slack off to give off the wrong (intended) image of the strength of the team. When we came out with a 10 minute Photo-Essay (very little, by Daniel's Standard) it was already considered as praiseworthy. We slacked off the rest though ; haha. I think we fooled the other schools.

However, schools to take note of were VS and CHIJ. VS sent only 1 guy (the rest couldn't make it) but he was competent enough to create a very good piece of work (very nicely done). 1 Guy! wow. CHIJ was also rather good.

Well, let's cross our fingers and hope for the best on 14-15 November, where we'll be up 24 hours trying to create a newspaper - with DotA playing included or not.

RIPC Camp Day 2!

Sorry for the length of the post, feeling pretty tired out.

Studio Photography was pretty fun ; with the instructor showing us the different aspects of studio photography and the cool-ios equipment like the soft box, reflectors, trigger; infared ; etc. The back drop made the photos look reaaaaaaaally pro-ded , too.

Incidentally, he got a model (supposedly) to pose for us too. My sister says she's ugly. My brother said "Even my backside's better looking then her!"

PS: Not for James's eyes. ahem.

Due to OBVIOUS REASONS (<

Anyway, we had even more fun with "models" ahem.

RIPC Camp day 1!

For those that don't know what RI's never ending list of abbrieviations (FT, LT,AVT, eTc) it stands for Raffles Institution Photography Club.

Met at Seminar Room 1 at about 8.30 pluss. Went through a talk about photography genres - Landscape and Macro by NigelFong, Street Photographer by another SPH photographer. Frankly speaking it was pretty boring, but some important points were worth taking down. I was also kept entertained by Jordan's never-ending supply of Duel Masters Cards.

(side note: my brother has 1st gen Pokemon cards! zomgut.)

Now, the fun part. We took a bus (156) to Botanical Gardens where I was the tour guide for journey inside, since Nigel wasn't really very clear of the maps. GEOG RA STUDENT! But, once we got in he seemed to have a personal GPS and we walked (once again) to the Entrance. 2 pink/red dragonflies were found! :O

Visitors Centre was another treacherous walk. Orchid Garden was far more interesting though, and many types of orchids (oh, you knew that already?) were there. So now there's a pretty bunch of pictures of flowers sitting in the computer hard drive. There was also an uber cool mist room where the entire room was fogged up with mist and the temperature was comparable to an air-cons! except it was much more moisturizing and fun to play around with.

Walking to Holland Road from Botanical Gardens is NOT a good thing to do.

Lunch + LAN was pretty much fun after that. Dota game was a bit pointless though, one side was overpowered. -coughs-

Clarke Quay was next. Hung out at the exterior of the Central (where my mum's team designed it!) to snap supposedly discreet shots with a bazooka-like 70-300 lens. I suppose I could post up some shots, but this would really be a waste of time since uploading 5MB takes like 5 years =.= It's really a good place to take photo since people from all walks of life really just converge there and it's fun to see how they interact with their surroundings, etc.

Walked 14500 steps today, according to my phone. o_O

RE CONGRESS!

Was assigned to Issac Chay and Jianxiong (board brother!) along with Shayne Tan and some Sec 1 guy called Seah, i think. Designation spot was the Junior Block Atrium; where we stoned around from 7.50 to 8.50 stoning and carring the tables and chairs like coolies at Singapore River

As we watched them set up the booth Shayne couldn't stop laughing at JonLian and Matthew Chan's booth because he watched the LitRA production : Literally Literary was pretty funny and it featured stuff like "KING LEE" and "DEADER THEN FICTION". other interesting stuff included the cross dressing part where -ahem-s played the roles of different...genders. which one, it's up to you to decide.

ahaha! i can beat douglas if he gives me white cross! =D lucky me

anyway, our job as NEPS (non-educated noobcakes) were to tag around the senior prefects (Jianxiong and Isaac) and help out whenever we could. They actually mentioned if someone was dying we were supposed to help them o_O. or when fights broke out, etc etc. On the whole, it was pretty slack/easy-going because as what Mr Janus Lim said, it was pretty much on auto-pilot and there was nothing much for us to do.

Cool thing was, he allowed food and drinks inside the Jr Block Atrium! and he let us go on shifts to atrium to buy popcorn and cotton candy and stuff to eat and chill out. woot.

However, as the thing dragged on it got pretty boring. Jianxiong also clarified my doubts about the RIPB's different departments and what they usually did. The good point for some was that there were foreign outsiders coming in and presenting like the projects that they did, hence it wasn't so boring watching the regular stream of PAP-wannabes shirts walking in and out.

Conversely, some people took advantage of these...outsiders ; which of course included people of the opposite gender! (surprise, surprise) Kenneth Wee and Sumarli went around which a huge zoom lens taking picture of the event and "chiobu hunting" - a term they coined themselves. (the art of sneaking shots)

Well, at least the good point of slacking that I managed to sleep for about 30 minutes or so outside!

Issac and Shayne actually escorted (voluntarily? =D) the SAS girls to the hall. took them a millenium to return. I wonder why? Good thing i wasn't at the scene where they were asking people to escort, for I nearly was pushed up "front" when he gave me a direct order. woots.

Met another person where Jianxiong warned me about facing "interesting" type of people. Well in this case it wasn't a senior but it was another batchmate of mine =.= i guess he's just the qian bian type to ask for trouble. He asked for a balloon from Ming Zhe with his group of friends then when Ming Zhe politely refused he actually used a scissors and snipped off the balloons attached to the stalls - every single one of them.

As much as i really would like to give a 100000000000000000000 word essay on it, Sometimes i really wonder what's on these people's minds were they just want to have a little bit of sadistic (?) fun by trying to piss off as many people as possible. Somemore it was done to a Secondary 4 Senior, zwth.

Apologies to Mr Kenneth of 2F for tomorrow's interesting line up of events for you.

Getting my Morrison Wristband tomorrow!
